Drinking Culture in Australia

As in any other country, drinking is a way to relax and involve in social engagements in Australia. Hence, it is important to understand the Aussie drinking norms, especially when alcohol plays an important part in Australian social situations. To help you navigate the culture in Australia, here is a handy guide to knowing the norms, how to drink safely, alternatives to alcoholic drinks, and also, how to say no.

What is the drinking culture in Australia?

Apparently, drinking is a big part of any Australian social engagement. It’s hard to find a party or family gathering without alcohol in any form. Also, it is common to go out for after-hours - which is a social drink after work, with your colleagues or friends. Unlike America, the legal drinking age in Australia is 18.

Here are some statistics that might help you understand the Australian drinking habit a bit better. In a 2019 poll by the government, 47% of Australians admitted that they drink to get drunk, which is a higher number than in previous years. But overall, Australia’s attitude to drinking is improving – 63% of Australians limited their drinking to two standard drinks, with only 16% of Australians consuming more than five. Young adults and university students aged 18 to 24 nowadays are drinking less than the same age group back in 2007, and more Australians don’t drink alcohol at all compared to ten years ago. In general, Australians are drinking less, but they’re pickier and consuming more high-quality alcohol.

How to drink safely?

Since the drinking age in Australia is quite young, it is important to know how to drink safely.

1. Know your limit and stick to it

Only you know how much alcohol you can tolerate. The amount can change depending on your sex, age, weight, health, and many other factors. In a normal setting, it is recommended that healthy men and women limit themselves to two standard drinks a day, but the above factors could lower that number in reality. Hence, make sure you know your limit and don’t go over it.

2. Keep it slow

It is hard to tell how much alcohol you have consumed if you are drinking too fast. It might be too late once the alcohol hits and you realise you have had too much! Make sure to keep it slow, pace yourself so that you can tell what effect the alcohol is having on your mind and body.

3. Stay hydrated

One rule of thumb when consuming alcohol is to drink water and stay hydrated. Even though drinking water might not help you avoid hangovers, it can help to flush out toxins and restore your hydration levels. Also, eating something will decrease the rate at which the alcohol is digested and protect your stomach.

What if I don’t drink alcohol?

We understand that you might have alcohol intolerance, or you might not be in the mood for it. Of course, there are alternatives you can always choose to enjoy your night out. Virgin drinks and mocktails are great alcohol-free choices, as they have the same flavour and taste as usual cocktails, without the alcohol. Some options you can always opt for:

  • Lemon, lime and bitters: This drink is very popular in Australia. Its alcohol content is so low that it’s barely noticeable, although some bars may require identification to purchase it.
  • Ginger beer: Despite the name, most ginger beers don’t actually have alcohol in them (or very low alcohol content).
  • Shirley Temple: This cherry, ginger ale, and grenadine drink is perfect for those with a sweet tooth.

How to say no?

In a country where drinking culture is popular like Australia, knowing how to say no is crucial. Here are a few ways that you can note to yourself in use in the next event when you might not feel like having one.

“I’m driving.”

Being the designated driver is the best excuse. No one wants you to drink and drive, so any offers of alcohol will be off the table.

“I’ve got to get up early tomorrow.”

Everyone knows how awful it is to drink and have to wake up early, especially for work. Anyone who has had a bit too much to drink will be familiar with the awful wake-up call that is a hangover. Getting up early for work or other commitments is a great excuse, as it shows that you’re in control, not the alcohol.

“I’ve reached my limit for tonight.”

Most people will be aware that there’s a limit when it comes to social drinking. Your friends and family will respect your self-control.

There is always another safe option, which is to drink at home! Stay home, get your alcohol delivery straight to your door and enjoy your night in warmth.
