4 Traditional Christmas Cocktails

From eggnog and wassail to Tom and Jerry and poinsettia, these traditional Christmas beverages are as much a part of the holiday season as the tree and delicious baked goods. The recipes have endured the test of time and will brighten your holiday season.

Eggnog

Nothing can beat a glass of Eggnog on a Christmas day. It's a decadent, creamy drink that many people crave around December, and it typically conjures up good memories.

Eggnog is simple to prepare from scratch and tastes better than store-bought versions. There are also a variety of recipes to pick from, including large-batch and single-serve eggnogs, as well as nonalcoholic and vegan options. This exquisite eggnog martini made with amaretto liqueur is a must-try.

Wassail

A walk around the neighborhood, complete with caroling and, as one popular song implies, bowls of wassail, was once a Christmas custom. It was a delightful way to enjoy the Christmas spirit with family and friends, and it was something that modern culture often lacks.

Wassail is a warm holiday punch with aromatic spices that is not merely the topic of a carol. There are a couple different ways to manufacture it as well. You can make a brandy and sherry cocktail or a rum and beer cocktail. In any case, include wassail in your holiday party will ensure that it is remembered.

Hot Buttered Rum

The most comfortable of Christmas drinks may be hot buttered rum. It's hard to resist because it's warm, spicy, and buttery smooth, with a rum base.

This is a custom you may enjoy alone or with a small group of friends, and the recipe is ridiculously easy. The butter batter can even be made in large batches. It'll be ready whenever you have holiday visitors or just want a warm mug to yourself.

Tom & Jerry

Warm milk is delicious, but with a shot of brandy or rum, it's even better. That's exactly what you'll find in the Tom and Jerry cartoons.

On a freezing winter night, you can still locate bars that mix up a batch of delicious warm milk punch. It's the ideal social drink to sip with friends while returning home for the holidays. Best of all, it is simple to create in your own bar and the batter may be made ahead of time.

  1. Step 1: Rinse a small coffee mug (or white ceramic Tom & Jerry cup) with boiling water to warm it, then discard the water.
  2. Step 2: Add the rum, cognac and batter into the cup and top with hot milk.
  3. Step 3: Garnish with a mixture of 2 parts freshly grated nutmeg to 1 part each ground clove and ground allspice.

*Tom & Jerry batter: Separate 3 egg yolks and whites and set aside. In a nonreactive bowl, whip the egg whites with 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar until stiff peaks form. In a separate bowl, beat the yolks with 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 ounce Jamaican dark rum and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. When the yolk mixture is completely combined, gently fold it into the egg white mixture. Keep refrigerated.
